The third week of March is American Chocolate Week, yet another excuse (as if we need any) to indulge in milk chocolatey goodness (or whatever your favorite kind of chocolate might be). If you do plan on indulging a bit this month, you might want to look for free samples and offers from your favorite chocolate companies, as many will be distributing them during American Chocolate Week.
Here are some other ways you might want to celebrate…
Try chocolate flavors wherever you go. Go for the chocolate pancakes, ice cream, desserts, whatever.
Try chocolate-covered foods, such as raisins and pretzels. Dip whatever fruits or snack foods you already have in chocolate, from graham crackers to banana chunks, and see what creative concoctions you can come up with.
Bake a chocolate pie, brownies, or something else that will scrumptiously fill your home with the aroma of chocolate.
Play the game that Juliette Binoche plays with Johnny Depp in Chocolat and see what kind is your favorite. Predict your lover’s favorite. Make fondue together; add something spicy for a bit of zing. Heck, just watch the movie Chocolat!
On that note, watch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with your kids. Try both the original and the Depp version and see which they like the best. (Is there a reason Johnny Depp is in all of these chocolate movies?)
Drizzle some chocolate or chocolate chips in your oatmeal, cereal, or French Toast. Try chocolate yogurt. Your kids will love having “dessert” for breakfast. Let them experiment with chocolate syrup or Ovaltine powder on everything from toast to eggs and see what they like.
Speaking of which, try some new chocolate cereal you’ve never had—or buy some you had as a child and see if you still like it. (Many have changed quite a bit.) Drink carnation instant breakfast—they have new no sugar added versions that are healthier, especially when added to skim or almond milk.
Tour a chocolate factory. Explore Hershey, Pennsylvania.
Go to every ice cream parlor in your town—one per night for the week—and try a different chocolate flavor every time. Just get one and share with the family—or get everyone their own and pass them around for more flavors to try.
Go for non-caloric versions of chocolate, such as chocolate bath salts, lotions, lip glosses, perfumes, and candles. (I think I’ll have to buy myself some chocolate candles this weekend with that thought in mind!)
