I am a Georgia girl who loves her pecan pie. During this past year one of my greatest joys was living in a house with numerous pecan trees that made it easy to make homemade pecan pies throughout the winter. Recently, a friend of mine introduced me to a bourbon and chocolate pecan pie recipe she found on Food Network. The recipe was from the show Food 911 featuring Tyler Florence (one of my favorites) and I was eager to try it out. After all, I love chocolate and have yet to run into anything that wasn’t improved by bourbon.
The recipe requires:
3 Eggs
½ Stick Butter (Unsalted)
2 oz Chocolate (Unsweetened)
1 ½ Cups Pecans (Halves)
1 Cup Sugar
¾ Cup Sugar Cane Syrup
½ Teaspoon Vanilla
3 Tablespoons of Bourbon
¼ Teaspoon Salt
I had everything in the house except for the cane syrup (was out) and the bourbon. I went to the grocery store for the sugar cane syrup, and the liquor store for the bourbon. At the liquor store I approached the cashier and asked her to point me to the cheapest bourbon they had (explaining I needed it for cooking) and was able to purchase what I needed in five minutes.
Cooking the pie filling mixture was similar to preparing the filling for a traditional pecan pie. I followed my traditional pecan pie recipe only changing the steps to melt chocolate and mix in the bourbon. I didn’t use the pie crust recipe included (I prefer store bought) and baked the pie at 350 degrees for about 50 minutes.
The chocolate and bourbon add a unique flavor to the already rich taste of pecan pie. Next time I will leave out the bourbon and just enjoy a chocolate pecan pie. My family enjoyed the pie, but I didn’t like the flavor the bourbon added to the pie.
